Abstract. A case study for one region of the USA is provided. The Southwest (Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico) is a region defined by marginality for human habitation due to high- and low-altitude deserts, droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and a short growing season for : Ryan P. Harrod, Debra L. Martin. Tree ring data from southern and Baja California indicate that shifts in the Pacific Decadal Oscillation from positive to negative have occurred throughout the past yr (Biondi et al., ). The known major Pacific Decadal Oscillation reversals of and are matched by reversals in tree growth time series from these sites.

Abstract: Tree-ring data from id-elevation (~ m) giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) and high elevation (~ m) pines (Pinus balfouriana, Pinus albicaulis) were used to select extreme growth years from which temperature, precipitation and large-scale winter (November-Marsh, NM) mn circulation patterns associated with the extreme. Estimated total area of road surfaces grew from % of the map area in ( ha) to % in (3, ha). These estimates of road surface areas do not include shoulders, cut and fill slopes, or ditches, and thus are conservative estimates of landscape area directly altered by roads.
